We agreed to keep the house clean. The sentence sounded complete until people began living in it. For one person, clean means nothing visible on the counter. For another, it means cleaning properly once a week and ignoring everything between. Somebody considers a pan unavailable only if another object cannot physically fit inside it. The useful conversation was not about who was naturally responsible. It was about specific tasks, timing, and what each of us could tolerate. Living together became easier when we stopped treating our own habits as common sense.
