I chose psychology because I was interested in people, memory, behaviour, and the brain. In my imagination, numbers were not invited. Then statistics arrived and acted as if it had been on the guest list the whole time. At first I treated every confusing formula as evidence that I had chosen the wrong degree. Other students used words like “basic” and I heard “basic for everyone except you.” What helped was realising that statistics is not a separate punishment attached to psychology. It is part of how we decide whether a claim about people is actually supported. I still do not enjoy every calculation. I do enjoy understanding what the calculation is protecting us from. That has made the subject less like an enemy and more like a colleague I would not choose to have lunch with.
