The room was mine, but the dirt belonged to everyone before me
My family collected the keys before I arrived and called with an update that began, “Do not panic.” The kitchen and bathroom were dirty. Not slightly unfinished, but dirty enough that my excitement changed into a cleaning plan before I had even seen the place. I felt ungrateful for being upset because I had found housing at all. That is a strange effect of scarcity: once a room exists, you feel pressure to accept every condition quietly. I cleaned it. The room became liveable. I still think students should be allowed to expect basic standards without proving they would otherwise be homeless.
